Scope & Content The collection contains materials related to the United States Postal Service that was acquired during his career. It also contains negatives of photos taken by Helmeke at Ohrdurf after it was liberated.
Admin/Biographical History Loren Helmeke served in the European Theater during WW2. He was drafted July 15th 1942 and was assigned to Army infantry unit communications. He was with is unit when they liberated the first concentration camp in Germany in 1945, Ohrdruf. After the war he moved back to Clay County and worked as a rural postal carrier with Georgetown Minnesota serving as his base of operations.
