Scope & Content The collection contains the records of the South Moorhead Betterment Association from 1967-1970. The vast majority of it relates to a zoning dispute over a tract of land in South Moorhead. The records include meeting minutes, press releases put out by the group, and things like petitions and need surveys that show the day-to-day activities of the organization.
Admin/Biographical History The South Moorhead Betterment Association was established in 1967 as a tax payers advisory group to look out for the interests of the southern part of Moorhead. According to the groups by laws their purposes were “to make continuous investigation and study of expenditures of public money, assessment and levies of taxes, playgrounds and parks, zoning and re-zoning proposals, matters of traffic congestion within the organization's area, study and assist in continued fine schools within the area.

To secure and disseminate accurate information among its members and the public about such matters.

To make recommendations relative thereto and present same to any public officers or political subdivisions necessary and to do and perform all things necessary and proper to promote economy, efficiency and sound judgment in the conduct of public affairs within the area.
The organization shall be non-political and shall, in no way, become affiliated with or connected with in any matter with any political party or faction and shall be non-profit in corporate structure.”

One of their large areas of concern was a zoning dispute in South Moorhead in the Swenson tract of land near highway 1994 where they fought the rezoning of the area to apartment buildings. The dispute ran from 1967-1970.
