Scope & Content The collection contains a relatively small amount of copy prints of SP Wange Portraits and postcards that were leant to the Clay County Historical Society for an exhibit by SP Wange's grandson. Nearly all of the photographs that were loaned are unidentified.
Admin/Biographical History Born in Gudbrandsdalen Norway on November 6, 1866, Sylvester Peter Wange was a Norwegian immigrant who came to the United States in 1889. He settled in Hawley four years later and opened a photography studio. For the most part Wange was a portrait photographer operating his studio for over 60 years when he died in 1956 at the age of 89. Along with being a photographer he served as mayor of Hawley during World War 1, forty-two years as a member of the Hawley School board, was a charter member of the Hawley Lutheran Church, and he also ran his own barbershop for a time. SP Wange died January 31st 1956 at the age of 89.
