|Scope & Content||The collection consists of photo copies of F. Jay Haynes pictures of Clay County with the majority of them being of Moorhead. They were obtained from the Haynes collection at the Montana Historical Society.|
F. Jay Haynes was a professional photographer who was instrumental in documenting the setting of Northwestern Minnesota. He opened his first studio in Moorhead in 1876 as well which helped him move his cabinet portraits to locals, and stereoviews of his railroad photographs. His Moorhead Studio stayed open for three years when he decided to move to Fargo. He established his final studio in St. Paul in 1889.
While a studio photographer in Minnesota/North Dakota Haynes also served as the Official Photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad starting in 1876. In 1881 he became the official photographer and concessionaire for Yellowstone National Park. In 1883 he served as photographer for Chester A. Arthur's visit to Yellowstone during Arthur's first year as president.
