Scope & Content The collection contains the program for the Red River Valley Walkathon which took place in the late summer of 1934. Contains photos of the contestants, the menu of what they ate during the contest, and many advertisements of local businesses that were around the Red River Valley at that time.
Admin/Biographical History The Red River Valley Walkathon took place in 1934 in Dilworth, Minnesota. To draw in spectators the walkathon also featured entertainment like vaudeville acts and big band music to help entertain the crowd. As far as the walking goes the walkers in the contest would have to walk for 45 minutes every hour with a fifteen minute rest period before walking again. They would get fed every three hours and were tended to by a full medical staff in case of emergencies.
