Scope & Content This collection contains papers relating to the life of Nellie Hopkins, her retirement from teaching, and the renaming of the First Ward School to the Ellen Hopkins School. There is also a small amount of documentation on her early life through her communion certificate from her church and teaching certificate from Moorhead State Teacher's College.
Admin/Biographical History Nellie Hopkins was born in Brainerd in 1875 and moved to Moorhead at the age of three. She attended Moorhead Public Schools as a child and graduated from the Moorhead State Teacher's College.

She spent 41 years as a teacher with over 30 of them being in the City of Moorhead. She served as Principal and first grade teacher at the 1st Ward School for over 30 years. One of the things she was well known for was transporting the first grade students from her school in her car “Henrietta” to the high school to attend “lyceum entertainments.” She was also very well known around town during her time for the annual picnic that she would throw for her students and their parents.

Upon her retirement in 1938 they renamed the first ward school the Hopkins School, a name by which it is still known today. After she had retired she was said to have spent her time quietly at home. She died in 1948 as a 75 year resident of Moorhead, MN.
